My name is Cortnie Been and I am 22 years old from Alma, AR. I am a senior at Arkansas Tech University pursing a Biomedical Pre-pharmacy degree. I am an avid horseback rider and I love spending time with family. I grew up surrounded by hunting and fishing. My love for the outdoors started when I was young and I wanted to spend everyday, rain or shine, outside. My dad took me squirrel and deer hunting with him often and bought me my first gun when I was 9 years old, a BB gun. As I got older my passion grew stronger and I wanted to experience more. My mom and dad have always been supportive of my love for hunting, but my dad only hunted deer and small game so he didn’t know much about hunting other animals. In my senior year of high school, I took the initiative to learn what I could about other species from family and friends. I have broadened my hunting from deer and small game to turkey, ducks, and geese.
In the summer of 2015, I tried my hand at bow fishing using a friend’s recurve bow. After reeling in my first gar, I fell in love with the added challenge of archery and bought my first compound bow two weeks later. I practiced almost everyday and was determined to be ready for the upcoming bow season for whitetails. Two weeks after opening day, I made my first bow kill on a beautiful doe. Shooting a bow is not only a challenge, but there is something relaxing about being full draw with your eye on the target that makes the world seem to stop for a moment. Hunting is more than killing animals though. I believe that God gave us the outdoors to enjoy and having the opportunity to come in contact with His beautiful creation is a blessing in itself. Even without a kill, being still with nature is worth the hunt. I love learning and trying new things, every hunt is a chance to learn something more about your target animal or your approach. I cannot wait to pass this joy on to my kids someday. One of my favorite things is getting to share experiences with other huntresses. Through my sorority at Tech, I met one of my closest friends and fellow huntress, Cara Holland. I have enjoyed sharing stories and hunting tips with her and look forward to meeting other women like her. I am still learning and being a part of the Huntress View Team has opened up doors to learn even more from other women who share the passion of hunting and being one with God’s creation.
